Welcome to SNUPI Lab.
As the demand for the particle beam applications including neutrons and plasma ion beams is rising, the advanced comprehension of the physics of plasma sources that are key to beam generation and control is essential.
SNUPI is focusing on numerical and experimental studies on the characteristics of plasma sources including high-power pulsed discharge, ion gun and RF discharge. In addition, our lab is carrying out a wide range of applied researches such as underwater discharge and wire explosion utilizing these technologies.
Our main research topics in progress can be classified as follows: Development of neutron generating/measuring devices- Analysis of physical interactions between particle beam and plasma, High-voltage pulsed-power technologies and their utilization- Research on the physics of high energy density plasma (HEDP)
Pulsed power & Ion source
Pulsed power is the science and technology of accumulating energy over a relatively long period of time and releasing it very quickly, thus increasing the instantaneous power. It can generate high energy density plasmas (HEDP) radiating strong X-rays or shock waves, enabling us to investigate extreme state of matter.
An ion source is a device that creates atomic and molecular ions utilized for various applications such as particle accelerators, neutron generators, ion implanters, and ion engines. Our research focuses on the efficient generation of high-density plasmas and extraction of positive or negative ions from them. Currently, we are developing various ion sources ranging from conventional DC arc sources to RF and MW sources for the utilization to semiconductor manufacturing, nano-fabrication, space propulsion, and D-D neutron generation.
